The Delhi High Court has found seven police personnel guilty in the case involving the death of a 20-year-old MBA student in a fake encounter and has sentenced them to life imprisonment.
The apex court has acquitted 11 others in the case.
A plea had been filed by all 18 police personnel involved in the case appealing the trial court verdict in the case.
A resident of Ghaziabad, Ranbir Singh was an MBA student who had travelled to Dehradun for a job, where he was killed in a fake encounter on July 3, 2009.
A Tragic Case
A two judge bench of Justice S. Murlidhar and Justice I .S. Mehta pronounced the judgment.
Calling it a tragic case, the court said that the fake encounter was an extrajudicial killing “which has no place in a legal system” governed by law. It also said that it was a manifestation of the “impunity” with which law enforcement authorities are “prone to act in utter disregard of the rule of law.”
The seven found guilty are: the then-inspector Santosh Jaiswal, along with the then-Sub Inspectors Gopal Dutt Bhatt, Rajesh Bisht, Neeraj Kumar, Nitin Chauhan and Chandra Mohan and Constable Ajeet Singh.
The personnel who were acquitted include: the then-constables Sunil Saini, Chander Pal, Satbir Singh, Nagendra Nath, Saurabh Nautiyal, Vikas Chandra Baluni, Mohan Singh Rana, Sanjay Rawat, Jaspal Singh Gosain, Inder Bhan Singh, and Manoj Kumar.
