Domestic workers or help workers are one of the largest working communities in India. In 2017, a public estimate reported that there are about 47.5 lakh domestic workers in India, including 30 lakh females. As one of the least organized employees, domestic workers are vulnerable to a number of forms of exploitation, including sexual abuse at their workplaces. Most domestic workers receive as little as Rs 5,000 a month from their work, that is essential for their families ‘ survival. Some situation in which they are out of work will have an adverse impact on their families, which will force them to stay silent. Despite the Sexual Harassment of Women at Work (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressing) Act, 2013, which recognizes domestic workers, there is no adequate redress system in place.

Generic drugs approved in India and other countries, but not in China, have been removed from the country’s “fake medicine” list and can be used by patients in small quantities as from December 1, according to the country’s newly revised drug administration law. Until now, all foreign generic drugs not authorized in China had been classified under the contraband category and was illegal to be used there. The change was approved and announced at the end of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s top legislature, on Monday (August 27, 2019). The modification to the law is an excellent news for Chinese patients suffering from illnesses such as cancer, as they will now be able to access efficient and inexpensive generic drugs from India particularly to treat illnesses such as cancer.
INDIA – ‘He Ruined the Life of Many Girls’: Law Student Has Gone Missing After Harassment Charge at the Former Union Minister
Days after she accused ex-union minister and BJP leader, Swami Chinmayanand, of harassment and “destroying the lives of several women,” a law student from SS Law College in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur went missing from her college hostel. A video was posted on Friday; the girl claimed that Chinmayanand, the director of her college, is threatening to kill her and her family because she has evidence that could get him in trouble. She asked for help from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. She is untraceable since Saturday, the day after she posted her video live on Facebook. The police have lodged no report or case.
INDIA – Uber Launched A 24×7 Safety Helpline For Passengers In India
Uber has launched a new round – the-clock safety helpline for its Indian riders.This safety feature was rolled out on a pilot basis in Chandigarh previously this March but has now been made accessible to customers across India. This will be in relation to the SOS function of Uber’s safety toolkit, which enables drivers to connect to law enforcement officials. Uber’s new security helpline can be accessed through security toolkit on a live monitoring screen for an ongoing ride. To connect to the safety helpline during a trip, consumers can use the shield icon on the live monitoring screen to open the safety toolkit. Then tap the ‘ Safety Helpline ‘ option and swipe to talk to Uber Safety Team. The helpline will address security issues related to the Uber ride.

As schools start re-opening their doors to kids across the country, the U.S. government has informed the federal judge that states have no authority to sue for new regulations to make school meals less healthy. In a Monday night court case, the government said New York, five other states, and Washington, D.C., could not sue on the basis of speculation that changes to the federally funded National School Lunch Program could cause children’s health issues and involve more treatment expenditure. The government also said that the states had no authority to sue under the doctrine known as “parens patriae,” Latin for “parent of the nation,” because it supposedly would not safeguard kids from damage.
INDIA – Mumbai-based Women’s Group Want The Government To Establish A Muslim Family Law
Mumbai-based women’s group has raised the problem of parity for Muslim women in Hindu and Christian law. They encouraged the government to introduce a Muslim family law in Parliament to promote gender justice and equality for women in society. In a letter to Union Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad last week, Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) asserted that Muslim family law would allow for legal justice for Muslim women on a par with Hindu and Christian women. The letter said, even as the campaign against the abolition of triple talaq was effective with the enactment of Muslim Women (Protection of the Rights of Marriage) Bill issues such as polygamy, halala, and age of marriage remained unresolved. Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also met with representatives of BMMA.
INDIA – Guidance On E-commerce To Be Compulsory Under Consumer Protection Law: Paswan
In order to safeguard consumer interests, the Government announced on Tuesday that the rules for e-commerce companies will be made compulsory under the new Consumer Protection Act and that the regulatory body will take tough action against violators. The Consumer Affairs Ministry decided to lay down the guidelines for the implementation of the Consumer Protection Act by December and requested stakeholders to send their opinions by September 15. Meanwhile, the Ministry also requested views on the draft rules on e-commerce by the same date. Paswan spoke to media after a meeting of a dozen Members of Parliament called to address their concerns before proceeding with the drafting of rules for the implementation of the law.

INDIA – Honour Killers Of Dalit Christian last Year Awarded Double Life Imprisonment
A court on Tuesday handed down double life imprisonment to 10 individuals for the honor killing of a 23-year-old Dalit Christian man last year, which caused extensive protests across the state. On 22 August, the Principal Sessions Court noted that the murder of Kevin P Joseph, involving his wife’s relatives, was a case of honor killing. All 10 accused found guilty under different parts of the Indian Criminal Code, including 302 (murder), 364A (kidnapping for ransom) and Section 506(2) (Punishment for criminal intimidation) were granted a double life sentence in the case, Special Public Prosecutor C S Ajayan told journalists here. Three persons, including the prime accused Syaanu Chacko, Kevin’s brother-in-law, were also sentenced under IPC Section 120(b) (Criminal Conspiracy).

The Kitchener Councilors voted unanimously to denounce the Quebec government’s bill on secularism. Ward 8 Coun. Margaret Johnston launched the motion at a council meeting Monday night. Uttar Pradesh is experiencing a spike in triple talaq cases, with 216 FIRs filed by Muslim females since the enactment of the statute making the practice of immediate divorce a punishable offense. Maximum of 26 such cases have been recorded in Meerut, followed by Saharanpur and Shamli, where 17 and 10 police cases have been lodged, a senior police officer informed Press Trust of India. These three locations in western Uttar Pradesh have a sizeable Muslim population.In eastern Uttar Pradesh, the highest percentage of 10 FIRs was recorded in Varanasi. Some of the primary factors for the criminal offense of triple talaq are dowry, estate disputes, and domestic violence, as per the FIRs.

In a setback to Sri Muthukumaran Medical College and Research Institute based in Chennai, the (HC) High Court of Madras said on Monday that admissions to 150 MBBS seats accessible to the College by counseling scheduled for August 27 can only be provisional and subject to final court orders. Only on 19 August, a single judge of the court granted a plea by the College and directed the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University to grant affiliation to the Institute and to include 150 MBBS seats accessible to the College for counseling. Earlier, the same petitioner had moved three PILs seeking direction from the authorities not to allow the college to participate in the academic year 2019-20, as most of the institute’s structures are unauthorized.
