India: Delhi HC Bans The Slaughtering Of Birds In Ghazipur

The Delhi High Court bench of Justices Rajendra Menon and V K Rao on Monday ruled that henceforth slaughtering of birds in Ghazipur should stop and then permitted the sale of live birds. The court gave the ruling after hearing a PIL arguing that poultry birds were being slaughtered illegally. The bench then directed the authorities to respond by filing a compliance report within a week.

 

India: 60-40 Evaluation Pattern: Students To Move Court Over Mumbai University’s Decision

Law students at the Mumbai University are currently at loggerheads with the University’s management over the decision of the latter to implement the 60-40 evaluation pattern in the LLB programme. The students argued that the University does not have a law faculty running on full-time basis and teachers were practicing lawyers who barely have time to peruse their papers. However, the management of the school was hell-bent on the implementation of the policy despite the students’ protest. The students have therefore resolved to move the court to stay the University’s decision.

 

UK: Labour Government To Build Additional Law Centres

In a bid to return legal aid as a pillar of support, the Labour Government on Monday expressed readiness to open more law centers in the state. This was made known in Liverpool by the Justice Secretary, Richard Burgon. Burgon asserted further that his party will partner the network of law centers to draft a proposal in this regard. Proponents of the proposal said it would be a welcome development if the Labour government achieve the plan.

 

 

India: Law Ministry Data Shows The Ratio Of 19 Judges To 10 Lakh People

The ratio of judges and the people in India currently stood at 19: 10 lakh as of Monday, according to a data made public by the Law Ministry. The data showed that the country was facing a shortage of judges with a combined strength of 6,000 judges. Out of this figure, over 5,000 judges are in the lower courts. The document also showed several vacancies from the subordinate courts up until the Supreme Court.

The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh on Monday was in a dilemma over the amendment of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes dubbed “Prevention of Atrocities Act.” The amendment is strongly opposed by the two dominant groups in the state – SC/ST and the upper caste. Singh is currently striving to appease both groups. Recall that the upper caste group had protested the amendment of the Supreme Court ruling in March 2008. The protesters carried placards with an inscription such as “reverse the amendment now”.

A renowned mining company, Vedanta whose Sterlite copper plant was denied consent to operate, on Monday told the National Green Tribunal’s panel that the action of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board was bad before the law. The NGT panel was headed by Tarun Agrawal, an ex Meghalaya High Court’s Chief Justice and lasted for over an hour. Vedanta was represented in the sitting by P S Raman.
