India: Sexual Harassment: #MeToo Campaign Forces Companies To Reopen Old Cases

The #MeToo campaign currently trending on most social media channels has forced companies to reopen old cases of sexual harassment reported by their female employees. One such company is a multinational financial institution. The company had given their CFO a clean bill of health in 2013 when he was reported to have harassed female employees. But due to the #MeToo campaign, the company has been forced to reopen the case. Investigators and lawyers on Wednesday asserted that the #MeToo campaign has gone a long way to change the way female employees are treated in their workplaces.

 

India: Crime Scene Management Workshop Held For Law Students

Law students of the University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab on Wednesday attended a workshop with the theme ‘crime scene management,’ which held at the campus of the CDTI. The workshop was organized by the University’s Criminal Justice Practice Cell in partnership with the Central Detective Training Institute. An assistant professor at the University, Anju Choudhary said after the workshop that students were trained on how to collect evidence in a crime scene, as well as the responsibilities of investigators.

 

France: Ex-French Polynesia Leader Sues France At the ICC

A former Polynesian leader who also doubles as a former archipelago’s president, Oscar Temaru on Tuesday announced that a lawsuit has been filed before the International Criminal Court in Hague against the country for carrying out nuclear tests which is against humanity. Temaru said his intention is to make the French government accountable. Temaru added that over 200 tests have been conducted from the 60’s to 1990. Polynesia is renowned for its tourist attractions.

 

India: BJP Government To Scale Down Domicile From 15 Years To 2 Years

Following the inability to close the skill gaps between locals and migrants in the industrial sector of Gujarat, the BJP government on Wednesday proposed to scale down the requirement for skilled migrants to become local residents by reducing the 15 years duration to 2 years. According to the Secretary at the Labour and Employment Department, Vipul Mittra, the proposal has been drafted long before Hindu migrant was attacked after police arrested a laborer for sexually assaulting a minor.

 

India: Government Appoints Tushar Mehta As The New Solicitor General

Ahead of next year general elections, the Indian government on Wednesday appointed Tushar Mehta as the new Additional Solicitor General of India. The duration of Mehta’s appointment will span until the 30th of June, 2020. Mehta replaces Ranjit Kumar, who had stepped down following the expiration of his time in office. Mehta has worked as a General Advocate in Gujarat the same period the PM, Narendra Modi was the state’s Chief Minister. Mehta is a senior advocate who has represented the Central government in most high profile cases.

 

Ireland: Ireland Parliament Passes Bill Putting Cancer Warning Label On Alcoholic Drinks

Both houses of the Irish parliament on Wednesday passed a bill which if signed into law by the president would see a warning label on cancer been pasted on all alcoholic drinks. The bill also pegged a minimum price for some categories of drinks. Recall that the bill was introduced on the floor of the parliament three years ago, but was opposed by alcoholic drinks producing companies. It is expected that the Irish president will sign the bill into law

 

India: OTT Content Control Is Still A Dream in India, Lawyers Says

Legal experts on Monday asserted that OTT content regulation is still a tall dream in the country. This is even as reports in the media have it that the Bombay High Court bench ordered the setting up of a pre-screening committee which is charged with the responsibility of stopping disturbing contents to be aired. A principal associate at a law firm in Delhi, Tanu Bannerjee on Wednesday clarified that the court’s decision was not intended towards OTT content, but that the court was hearing a PIL filed by a lawyer, Divya Gontiya. Banerjee further said that Gontiya had sought the court’s intervention on the regulation of OTT content, which the court had written to the ministry for their view.

The ICFAI Law School on Saturday held a national symposium with the theme “Legal Inclusion And Social Engineering,” at the campus of ICFAI in Hyderabad. The symposium held in three different sessions discussing topics such as proactive measures and social-legal measures, legal instrument and social change, as well as public policy and access to justice. The symposium was chaired and co-chaired by a lot of professional lawyers drawn from High Courts, Universities, National Law School, and NGOs, among others. India: Provide Us With The Details Of Rafale Fighter Jet Deal, SC Tells Government

The Supreme Court bench led by the new CJI, Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday told the Central government to provide it with the details of the Rafale Fighter Jet transactions on or before the 29th of October. The court made this remark after hearing a suit challenging the government to come clean with the details of the fighter jet transaction. The petitioners had alleged that the deal was fraught in corruption. Justice Gogoi said the court was not interested in the price details of the deal. According to sources from the Ministry of Defence, the government is preparing the notes to hand over to the court.

The Supreme Court bench led by the newly appointed CJI, Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday ordered 11 States and 2 UTs to forward all the cases involving MLAs and MPs to it latest two weeks from now. The bench also had Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and KM Joseph. Recall that in the last sitting, the court had requested 19 States and 6 UTs to submit a similar report. The court appointed an amicus curiae who is a senior lawyer in the person of Vijay Hansari to Superintendent over the case.

 

Canada: Ontario To Allow Sikhs From Using Helmets While Riding Motorcycles

The government of Ontario on Wednesday expressed readiness to allow Sikhs that wear turban not to done helmet whenever they are riding on motorcycles in the city from October 18. The government also have the indication that three other provinces will be exempted. The Bombay High Court bench on Wednesday terminated the molestation case filed by actress, Preity Zinta against a renowned entrepreneur and her ex-boyfriend, Ness Wadia. Before now, the court had request Zinta to conclude the 2014 case against Wadia. Zinta’s lawyer suggested that the actress has agreed to settle out of court provided the Industrialist will be willing to apologize. Wadia’s lawyer posited that the industrialist was not ready to plead for forgiveness. The alleged molestation took place during a football match at the Wankhede Stadium in May 2014. Both Wadia and Zinta co-owned Kings XI Punjab Football Club.

US: Donald Trump Signs New Law On Drug Costs

The United States president, Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a new law targeted at drug costs. According to a statement issued by his spokesman, the law would allow pharmacists to inform their clients on when to save money after paying the full price on drugs rather than depending solely on health insurance, which cost more money.
