India: Sexual Harassment: Mohandas Pai Calls For Implementation Of Policies In Workplaces

The #MeToo campaign currently trending of most social media platforms is gathering momentum. A popular ICT practitioner, Mohandas Pai on Thursday called for the implementation of stricter sexual harassment policies. Pai noted that the country has a good policy to curb sexual harassment, but that most corporations, especially government offices display lackadaisical attitude in the implementation of these policies. Pai further posited that the IT sector was leading in the implementation of sexual assault policies in workplaces.

 

India: Wrong Entry In CET Caused Aspirants To Miss Preferred Law Colleges

LLB aspirants who made a wrong entry in the CET have missed their preferred law colleges, according to a recent report. An aspirant from Delhi University who scored above 350th, for instance, was ranked 12,000 below aspirants who scored less on the first batch merit list. The reason is that the aspirant entered a wrong graduation score in the CET application form. The CET cell has now allocated her a law college that was not on her preference list. Mostly aspirants from Delhi University are the major victims of the circumstance due to the system used to grade students’ score.

 

Switzerland: Government To Impose Life Ban On Convicted Paedophiles From Next Year

The Swiss government on Thursday expressed readiness to impose a life ban on Paedophiles that have been convicted from working with children from next year. Recall that in May 2014, eligible voters had voted in support of a bill to permanently ban those who sexually abused children from associating with children. From January 1, a Judge will impose a permanent ban on convicted Paedophiles.

 

 

India: Renovated Delhi HC Edifice Smacks Of Modern Day Court Room

Every building needs routine renovation to keep tabs with modern day edificd, this is true particularly with most government offices, which are in a state of decadence. The Delhi High Court ‘C’ block building was recently renovated. The renovation according to government sources is in line with government’s plan to transform the Delhi High Court to modern day Courtroom. Recall that the government in 2013 had promised to expand the court’s carrying capacity by 40% within four years. The renovated building covers the entire four stories, which includes 16 judges’ chambers, 9 Registrars’ Court, and 15 Courtrooms, among others. Right now, Judges and lawyers can now make use of laptops and smartphones to study cases.

An English Don at the Smt RP and LAD College, Ruta Dharmadhikari on Thursday lectured the High Court Bar Association’s lawyers on a theme “Raising the bar: how to effectively communicate”. Professor Dharmadhikari said the #MeToo campaign has been long overdue. She further posited that one’s body language says a lot about the person’s personality. The Don outlined how lawyers are supposed to communicate in professional and personal capacity.

 

Australia: Do Not Expel Gay Students, Scot Morrison Says

Earlier this week, Scot Morrison had asserted that Schools were at liberty to determine the admission of students based on sexuality. But on Thursday, Scot Morrison through his spokesman posited that schools should not discriminate against gay students that the Ruddock report on religion was misrepresented. India: SC Collegium Recommends The Appointment Of Two District Judges And Three HC Lawyers

The Supreme Court collegium led by the CJI, Ranjan Gogoi, and two Supreme Court Judges, Justices Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph on Thursday recommended the appointment of two District Judges and three High Court lawyers as Judges of the Kerala HC. The Collegium considered the appointment of seven high court lawyers, but only three could scale through. The trio that was appointed is N Nagaresh, V G Arun, and P V Kunhikrishnan. Among the three of them, Nagaresh is currently a High Court Assistant Solicitor General.

 

India: Bombay HC Orders Tax Department To Recover Rs. 1.5 lakh From I-T Officers

The Bombay High Court on Thursday ordered the tax department to recover about Rs. 1.5 lakh from I-T Officers who allegedly adjusted the amount a taxpayer is supposed to refund to the coffers of the Income Tax Department without inquiring whether a valid notice to that effect has been served on the taxpayer. The court urged the tax department to carry out disciplinary actions against the offenders. Lawyers have expressed dismay in the case, arguing that it could set a precedence if the situation was not properly handled.

 

US: Advocacy Groups Sues Election Officials in Georgia

Advocacy Groups whose interest is in the Protection of voters’ right on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Georgia’s election official, Brian Kemp for allegedly blocking the registration of over 50,000 eligible voters with a view to propagate his chances of winning the gubernatorial election. Kemp has been nominated to fly the flag of the Republican party. His main opponent is the flag bearer of the Democrat party, Stacey Abrams. The election is scheduled to hold on November 6.

The Bombay High Court bench of Justices Naresh H Patil and Justice G S Kulkarni on Thursday directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to consider giving listening ears to residents who are opposed to its tree-cutting campaign in line with the Metro project. The court made this remark after hearing a suit instituted by social activists, Ruben Mascarenhas and the leader of Aam Aadmi Party, Preeti Menon. The duo had file the suit in order for the court to stop BMC from indiscriminately felling of trees until the metro station is constructed.

The Bombay High Court on Thursday dismissed a suit which sought to involve the CBI into the alleged forgery of Osho’s Will. A Pune based resident, Yogesh Thakkar had filed the suit in 2013 alleging that the  Will was forged in order to misappropriate crores of Rupees. While the hearing was ongoing, the court got the information that police officers from Pune had already filed ‘C’ summary suit before a court’s Magistrate in order to close the case.

UK: Doctors Are Free To Prescribe Medical Cannabis From Nov 1, Home Secretary Says

The UK’s Home Secretary, Sajid Javid on Thursday asserted that medical doctors can start prescribing medical cannabis to their sick patient from the 1st of November. Javid said the new law will be applicable in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The decision of the Government to allow doctors prescribe medical cannabis was informed after the government reviewed medicinal cannabis in the first quarter of this year.
