India: Ex-Supreme Court Judge Urges Centre To Draft A Law For Ram Temple Ayodhya

Amid growing calls by concerned citizens for the legislature to enact laws that would aid the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, an Ex-Supreme Court Judge, Jasti Chelameswar on Friday added his voice to the growing call on the Central government to consider enacting a law that would facilitate the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya. Retired Justice Chelameswar made the call at an event in Mumbai. He clarified that he has witnessed in the past where the legislative arm of government scuttled court processes. Recall that the issue of construction of Ram temple has been pending before the Supreme Court.

 

India: Government Amends Companies Law Through The Promulgation Of an Ordinance

The Indian government on Friday amended the Companies Act, 2013 through the promulgation of an ordinance. This was revealed by a senior government official. According to the official, the amended section of the law relates to the restructuring of corporate offenses. There were news reports that Cabinet members had approved the proposal to issue the ordinance on Thursday and have received the assent of President Ram Nath Kovind. Recall that in August a government panel had suggested a review of the Companies Act, 2013 with a view to improving the ease of doing business.

A renowned Lawyer and the CEO of Callington Chambers law firm, Advocate Vicky Milner on Friday asserted that out of the overwhelming number of female lawyers that graduate from the law school every year, only a few proportions of that number make it to the top. She gave an example by citing the city of Jersey. Milner posited that in Jersey, the ratio of female lawyers to their male counterparts in major law firms is 1:7.5. She advised female lawyers to always strive to get to the top.

 

India: Despite Numerous Sexual Misconduct Charges, Allegation Of Rape Surfaces Against MJ Akbar

A former state Minister for foreign affairs, MJ Akbar is not in the right frame of mind at the moment; the reason being that despite the numerous sexual misconduct allegations hanging on his neck, a business editor who works with the National Public Radio in the United States on Friday leveled a rape allegation on him. The rape allegation was peddled by Pallavi Gogoi through an article she published on the Washington Post. She accused Akbar of raping her when she was 23 years old and was working with The Asian Age at the time. Akbar on Friday said he would file a defamation suit against her at the Patiala House Court in Delhi.

 

India: SC Throws Out CBI’s Appeal Challenging Delhi HC Order In The Bofors Case

The Supreme Court bench presided over by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Friday rejected the appeal lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation against the decision of the Delhi High Court which exonerated those that were accused in the Bofors case. According to the Bar and Bench, the decision of the Supreme Court was hinged on inordinate delay. Recall that in May 2005, a bench of the Delhi High Court had exonerated three Hinduja brothers in the Bofors case. The CBI had in Federal approached the SC to upturn that decision.

 

Canada: Canada Pushes To Revive Consumer Rights When Dealing With Banks

The Canadian government on Friday expressed readiness to re-introduce the consumers’ rights it once abandoned when dealing with banks in the country. This was revealed by the Finance Minister, Bill Morneau during the presentation of a budget bill dubbed “C-86”. The bill has some major changes to the law regulating major lenders like Toronto-Dominion Bank and Royal Bank of Canada. The proposed changes were made two years ago but were abandoned due to jurisdictional disputes.

An erudite legal practitioner, Deepika Singh Rajawat, 38, who took up the Kathua rape case on Friday expressed fear over the safety of her family. Rajawat spoke with pressmen on Friday from her residence. She asserted that on several occasions she has received death and rape threats since she took up the case to seek justice against the perpetrators of the crime. She noted that a lot of people have also supported her in the struggle.

 

US: Single Mother Passes Bar Examination, Graduation Photos Go Viral On Social Media

The graduation photographs of a single mother of five kids on Friday trended on major social networking sites. The woman named Ieshia N. Champs, 33 was celebrated across the United States for achieving such feat. “God did it and I am still shouting,”Champs had posted on her Facebook page, displaying the result of her Texas Bar Exam. Recall that in 2009, it was reported that Champs lost everything she had, including her husband and job. She even attempted suicide.
