MHA on COVID-19 crisis- Landlords can't demand rent from students, workers for 1 month

An order has been issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) that bars the landlords from demanding rent from students, workers and migrant laborers for a period of one month amid the lock-down due to coronavirus.

If the landlords force the people to vacate their houses will face serious action, warns MHA.

In this regard, the state governments are also directed to provide food and shelter to thousands of migrant workers who are without jobs and essentials.

The order also directs the states to enforce a 14-day quarantine on workers who have left for their hometowns.

MHA order, issued under the Disaster Management Act, reads, “The states and Union territories shall ensure adequate arrangements of temporary shelters, and provisions of food etc. for the poor and needy people, including migrant laborers, stranded due to lockdown measures in their respective areas.”

The order has also mentioned, employers must pay wages to their workers without making any deductions and must be made on the due dates.
