The Issue Of Tinted Windows And The Challans
According to reports submitted by Delhi Police, drivers who put tinted film on their windows face severe consequences. According to the police, prosecutions in this area have climbed nearly seven times since 2022 and doubled in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2023.
With 851 bookings this year, Najafgarh is at the top of the list, followed by Nangloi and Punjabi Bagh. Data from Delhi Traffic Police indicates that 7,567 challans were issued for this infraction under the Motor Vehicles Act between 1st January and 15th March of this year.
Comparing 3,029 bookings in the same period in 2023 with 1,083 in 2022, there has been a significant increase.
Every motor vehicle’s widescreen and rare window must be made and kept in a way that permits at least 70% of light to be seen through them to comply with Central Motor Vehicle Rules number 100.
As to the added rule, the side windows are made of glass that meets Indian standards and must be kept in such a state that at least 50% of the light can be seen through them.
Since the Nirbhaya case, traffic cops have started driving regular drives to reduce this offence. In situations such as these, the tinted windows obscure the view of the interior of a car.

A 2012 Supreme Court decision further stated that disobeying this order would result in contempt of court.
According to the Supreme Court, it is evident from a straightforward interpretation of the regulation that safety glass with visual light transmission (VLT) must be installed in cars at the time of manufacture.
Stated differently, the regulation expressly forbids modifying the VLT in any manner. In an attempt to stop the threat posed by darkened windows, police in Najafgarh have arrested 851 offenders.
Following 617 and 417 challans each were Nangloi and Punjabi Bagh. The areas where the tinted glass regulation has been broken the most frequently this year are Tilak Nagar, Kapashera, Dwarka, Karol Bagh, Badarpur, IDI Airport, and Rajouri Garden.
With 249 challans in 2022, RK Puram had the most, followed by Khajuri Khas with 179 bookings in 2023. The traffic police issued a warning, saying that using optical obstructions on car windows would not be tolerated.
