Transferring vehicles from one state to another requires the submission of certain documents and the completion of certain formalities

What is vehicle registration?

Vehicle registration refers to the process of registering a vehicle whether a two-wheeler or a four-wheeled vehicle with government authority which is the State Authority where you reside.

Registering a vehicle denotes that the State Authority has been informed by you that you hold ownership of the vehicle registered and intend to use it on public roads.

Registering a vehicle affirms that the vehicle belongs to you and there is a Unique Identification Number to the vehicle.

In order to get your vehicle registered it is important for you to pay a road tax at the local Regional Transport Office (RTO).

Having a vehicle registration is mandatory in the country and the absence of it can result in your vehicle being detained and can also cause you to pay a hefty fine.

What are the documents required for transferring the vehicle registration from one state to another?

It is essential that the owner of the vehicle provides the original registration certificate from the previous state in which the vehicle was registered.

Form 28, Form 29, Form 30 has to be duly filled by the owner of the vehicle.

Four copies of the form are to be made if the vehicle to be registered is under the hire/purchase or lease agreement.

What is the role of form 28?

Form 28 is the document that grants permission to the owner of the vehicle to transfer the vehicle from the old state of residence to the new state.

Besides form 28, form 27 is also to be duly filled and submitted by the applicant seeking the transfer.

Form 27 is the application for the assignment of a new registration mark to the motor vehicle.

Form 20 is to be duly filled by the applicant as it is the application through which the applicant is enabled to register the motor vehicle in his/her new state of residence.

Form 34 is to be filed if the vehicle is subject to hire purchase/hypothecation/lease agreement.

The applicant is required to pay the charges levied for the road tax.

The submission of the copy of the document that can be accepted as the address proof of the owner of the vehicle is to be made.

A copy of the valid certificate that states that the pollution emitted by the vehicle is under control has to be submitted.

PAN card of the owner is essential and form 60 or form 61.

 

List of documents accepted as the Proof of Residence- 

 

  • Voter ID
  • Passport- serves as both, age and proof of residence.
  • Telephone/Water Charges Bill/Rlecricity Bill.
  • Rent agreement
  • Employers certificate in case of State Govt/Central Govt/Local Bodies/ Private LTD company accompanied with attested copy of ID card.
  • Certificate of registration in case of a company or firm.
  • Insurance Certificate.
  • In case of students living in hostel, Certificate issued by the Principal of the educational institution the student belongs to.
  • House allotment letter issued by the government department.
  • Registration certificate.
  • Proof of legal presence in India accompanied with the proof of residence in case of foreigners.
