The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the families of the two girls who were electrocuted in Chennai after heavy rain lashed the city.
Bhavna and Vijayshri, both eight-years-old, stepped on a live wire that had fallen out of a junction box in Kodungaiyur locality of the city. After the incident came to light, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami announced compensation of Rs 3 lakh for the families of both the girls. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will also give each family Rs 2 lakh. Three officials of the electricity board were also suspended.
On Thursday, advocate George William made an urgent mention after which the High Court initiated suo motu proceedings. William alleged that the incident was a result of sheer negligence on part of the government and its officials. He asked for a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for both the families of the victims.
On Friday, the government informed the bench of the compensations announced. The High Court asked the state to disburse the balance amount in the next seven days.
At least 14 people have died in rain-related incidents across Tamil Nadu since heavy showers lashed the state, IANSÂ Â reported on Friday. The downpour has affected localities in Chennai such as Mudichur, Velachery, Alandur, Pallikaranai, Korattur and several parts of North Chennai. However, the water levels receded on Friday morning.
